Redescription and Life History of Contortylenchus brevicomi, a Parasite of the Southern Pine Beetle Dendroctonus frontalis

Abstract

Larval and adult life stages are described for Contortylenchus brevicomi (Massey) Riihm parasitizing a Mississippi population of Dendroctonus frontalis, the southern pine beetle. Fourth-stage larvae and free-living adult females of this species are identified and described for
the first time. The life cycle of C. brevicomi can be reconstructed from this study. The adult female nematode lays eggs in a mature beetle. Larval development progresses within the hemocoel until fourth-stage larvae exit the host. Mating occurs in beetle galleries and only females enter an immature beetle host.

Comparison of Methods for Estimation of Attacking Adult Populations of Dendroctonus frontalis

Abstract

Attacking adult populations of the southern pine beetle in loblolly pine, Pinus taeda L., were measured by using 3 estimation procedures; X-ray analysis, bark dissection to locate attacking adults, and bark dissection to locate the entry point of each attack. Comparison of mean attack density indicates the different methods to be equally reliable estimators.

Mutualism Between Dendrolaelaps neodisetus and Dendroctonus frontalis

Abstract

The relationship between the southern pine beetle, Dendroctonus frontalis Zimm., and one of its common phoretic mites, Dendrolaelaps neodisetus (Hurlbutt) is probably mutualistic. Beetles harboring D. neodisetus have less endoparasitism by the nematode, Contortylenchus
brevicomi (Massey) Rahm.

Fatty-Acid Composition of Dendroctonus frontalis at Various Developmental Stages

Abstract

Fatty acids of the neutral lipid (NL), and phospholipid (PL) fractions of the southern pine beetle, Dendroctonus frontalis Zimmermann, were examined at 6 developmental stages: egg, inner-bark larval, outer-bark larval, pupal, emerging adult, and attacking adult. In all life stages, the predominant fatty acid of the NL fraction was oleic (29-51%). Palmitic acid was the 2nd most common (16-24%), except in the eggs and attacking females, where linoleic was slightly higher (28 and 24%). Oleic was also highest in the PL fraction of the larval, pupal, and emerging adult stages (27-38%). Linoleic was 2nd in concentration in these stages (14- 19%). In the attacking beetles, linoleic was highest (25%), followed by oleic (19%) ; and in the eggs, shortchain compounds (less than C16:0) accounted for over 1/2 the fatty acids.

Seasonal Variations in Fat Content and Size of the Southern Pine Beetle in East Texas

Abstract

Average fat content and pronotal width of newly emerged adults of Dendroctonus frontalis Zimmerman varied with season in east Texas. Fat content of beetles Beetles were smallest during the months of July, August and September. Females, in general, were larger and had higher fat contents than males, regardless of emerging during the spring and fall was greater than season. Implications in relation to bark beetle dispersal that of beetles emerging during the summer and winter. and seasonal behavior are discussed.
